PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Single parents with cancer face many challenges, from paying their bills to finding time for grocery shopping. The Singletons is a Phoenix non-profit helping moms and dads going through those difficult diagnoses.
“I haven’t been working through this, lots of doctor visits and things going on,” said Marleah Nigro, a Phoenix mom fighting breast cancer.
Oncologists told her about The Singletons and how it gave families free resources like household supplies, dinner kits, and help paying bills.
“It’s been stressful, but I feel okay. Just knowing that I have support has made it easy,” said Nigro.
This year, The Singletons Outreach Coordinator, Joanne Grady, said the need for help is up by about 50% compared to previous years.
“During COVID, so many of the donors who would coordinate office collections or social group collections, those organizations have kind of ceased to exist in the normal way,” said Grady.
The non-profit said supplies on shelves are running lower than usual.
“Our enrollment has increased quite a bit,” said Grady. “I believe the latest count is we have 70, 72 families getting program services.”
International Day of Charity falls on Sunday, and Grady hopes Arizonans will consider donating to help people like Nigro.
“A lot of times, you kind of feel like on your own,” said Nigro.
